X’s Audio and video calls feature
Elon Musk-owned social platform X (formerly Twitter) introduced voice and video calling features last year. This feature allows users to receive voice and video calls from other X users, similar to WhatsApp and FaceTime. However, at the time of launch, this feature was limited to paid X subscribers, but now the company is making it available to more X users.
This information has also been shared by X engineer Enrique Barragan through an X post and by the company’s CEO, Linda Yaccarino. Enrique writes: “We’re slowly introducing voice and video calling to non-Premium users. Try it. You can now also choose to allow calls from all users.”
If this feature is expanded further, anyone on the platform will be able to make and receive calls, and this functionality will no longer be limited to paying users. The feature is available in the direct messaging section of the app and works similarly to other apps like WhatsApp and Instagram. The feature is integrated with the iOS CallKit API and allows users to view incoming calls on their lock screen just like a regular call.
X allows users to control who can call them. You can choose people from your address book, choose accounts you follow, or choose only verified users. Users can also turn off the feature completely by turning off the “Enable audio and video calling” toggle. Once enabled, no one will be able to call you through X.
