Apple’s next-generation iPhone 16 series is scheduled to launch in autumn 2024, featuring new, faster processors, larger display sizes on the Pro models, and better AI features.
It’s only been a few months since Apple launched its latest iPhone, the iPhone 15 series, but technology enthusiasts are already eagerly eyeing the next generation, the iPhone 16. Expected to be released in late 2024, leaks and rumors are already circulating on the internet. The upcoming iPhone 16 is a major improvement over the previous model.
Apple is rumored to be planning a major design change, similar to the change from the iPhone X to the iPhone 11. It is being said that the company is focusing on improving camera features, battery life, thermal design, and much more. The iPhone 16 is expected to come with a new, faster processor, possibly called the Apple A18 Bionic chip, with increased AI computing cores compared to the existing model. Additionally, there are rumors that the iPhone 16 models may have a larger display size than the “Pro” models, have significantly better cameras, and include new buttons.

iPhone 16 series: we know everything so far
Apple is reportedly developing the next-generation A-series chips using advanced N3E technology for the iPhone 16 series. These chips are expected to improve device speed and battery life. The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus may have an A17 chip, which may be different from the A17 Pro in the Pro models. Analyst Jeff Pu has suggested renaming all models to A18 and giving the Pro models additional GPU cores and an improved neural engine to boost AI capabilities.
The button layout may also change in the iPhone 16 lineup. The popular Action button on the iPhone 15 Pro may be included as standard across all models. Additionally, a new “capture button” is rumored to be coming, which is similar to a physical camera shutter and offers multi-level pressure sensitivity for focusing and taking photos. The mute switch may be removed in favor of these new features.
In the camera department, Apple is also expected to make major design changes. The iPhone 16 series is likely to abandon the traditional diagonal camera setup in favor of a new vertical arrangement. This design change is believed to enable features like spatial video capture for Apple’s Vision Pro headset. A possible “Tetra Prism” 5x optical zoom lens could significantly improve zoom capabilities. The Pro model has a 48-megapixel ultrawide lens, similar to the technology used in the wide lens, for better low-light photography. The iPhone 16 Pro Max may also feature a unique 48-megapixel wide-angle camera with a hybrid lens, in addition to an advanced telephoto and ultra-wide-angle lens. Both Pro models may get access to the previously exclusive 5x telephoto lens, and the Pro Max may also include a super-telephoto periscope camera for better zooming.
The Pro models will likely be larger in size, with the iPhone 16 Pro measuring 6.3 inches and the Pro Max potentially measuring 6.9 inches. The increased size makes the body slightly larger and heavier, but the thickness and overall design remain the same. Apple is likely to implement microlens technology to improve the brightness and reduce the power consumption of its OLED panels.
Recent reports also suggest that the next iPhone 16 may come with an always-on display feature. This feature allows users to look at their phone and view information without completely waking up the device.
The Pro model may use new battery technology to extend battery life and support 40W wired charging and 20W MagSafe charging. The leaked images suggest a redesigned battery for the Pro model with a 3355 mAh capacity. A rumored graphene thermal system is expected to improve thermal management, and the Pro model may come with a metal battery case. All standard iPhone 16 models can be expanded to 8GB of RAM.
Following industry trends, Apple is also rumored to increase AI features in its iPhone 16 lineup. It’s unclear whether the iPhone 16 will have exclusive access to all the advanced AI features in iOS 18, but there are rumors that there will be limitations on some features that use larger language models. Either way, iOS 18 is expected to introduce new AI features like smart Siri message integration, personalized Apple Music playlists, and AI-powered content creation tools.
