OnePlus Watch 2 is well aware that its first smartwatch was a colossal failure. Almost three years later, I’m still haunted by its release and the terrible experience of reviewing it. The news that OnePlus is back with a second-generation smartwatch fills me with concern, but on paper, the update sounds promising. The $299.99 OnePlus Watch 2 not only runs Google’s Wear OS 4, but it also has a new dual-engine architecture that reportedly allows for up to 100 hours of battery life. Oh, and it also comes with Google Assistant.
The most interesting thing about the OnePlus Watch 2’s hardware is that it is powered by two different chipsets: the Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 and the BES 2700 MCU. The result is a dual-OS architecture that’s somewhat similar to Mobvoi’s TicWatch Pro 5. The BES2700 MCU runs an RTOS and handles background activities and “simple tasks”. The Snapdragon W5, on the other hand, runs more intensive tasks like apps. Add to this a 500mAh battery and you get an estimated 100 hours of battery life. However, there is a caveat. Estimated 100 hours is defined as normal use in Smart Mode with the Always On display turned off and 30 minutes of GPS activity recorded. In high usage scenarios, such as when AOD is turned on, this is reduced to 48 hours. Still, Wear OS isn’t too bad for a watch. The watch also supports fast charging using OnePlus’ proprietary cradle and pogo pin charger. Full charging takes about 1 hour. You can also configure up to 2GB RAM and 32GB storage.
In terms of design, the OnePlus Watch 2 adopts a more classic analog watch look with a circular dial. It comes in the same size and has a sapphire crystal lens and a stainless steel chassis. Available in black steel and “Radiant” steel colors, it has a 5ATM and IP68 water and dust resistance rating. It also has an action button that acts as a shortcut to different fitness modes.
When it comes to health and fitness features, the OnePlus Watch 2 can track over 100 sports and features advanced running metrics like ground contact time, ground balance, and VO2 max. It has an optical 8-channel heart rate sensor and dual-frequency GPS. The latter means the watch has access to L5 satellite frequencies, which translates to more accurate GPS data in harsh environments like cities and forests. So far, this is a feature we’ve only seen added to more robust smartwatches like the Apple Watch Ultra and the Garmin Fenix 7 lineup. Tracking stress and sleep and assessing snoring risk also works.
Again, on paper, this looks like a promising smartwatch. Now that Fossil is gone, there’s also an opportunity for OnePlus to step in as a viable alternative to third-party Android watches. It ticks a lot of the right boxes in terms of feature set, price, battery life and design. Switching to Wear OS 4 is a smart move, especially since it launches with Google Assistant. This is disappointing for Android users, as many third-party Wear OS watches don’t have digital assistants yet. Instead, people who want that feature typically have to buy a Pixel Watch, Samsung Galaxy Watch, or a Fossil watch that operates on borrowed time. The only potential downside is that, unlike Fossil, this watch isn’t compatible with iOS.
Then again, the original OnePlus Watch also looked promising, but failed in every aspect. Whether this new watch will sink or swim depends on its execution. I have a review department and will test it diligently before and after the official release. The good news is that the bar is very low and working as expected can lead to dramatic improvements.
The sale of the OnePlus Watch 2 will start on March 4. To add insult to injury, OnePlus is offering a limited-time offer where you can purchase any watch, smart or otherwise, for an additional $50.
